about

This is my very first solo album. And when I say "solo," I'm literally talking, "it's all me – from soup to nuts." The creation process was very self-indulgent; in other words, I didn't make it for "you."

I felt like I owed it to myself, after being a member of 4 different bands, and recording 5 albums and numerous demos over the last 21 years. "Shut Out the World – A Shoebox Collection" is my 40th birthday present to myself.

I realize I used 10 words in the previous 2 paragraphs that refer to me, and only one referring to you – the listener. After working on this on and off for the last 3 years (some baseline ideas go back to 2010), I kinda' didn't want to release it at all. The process was my private garden if you will; my escape, my hobby. The second it hits others' ears, my garden of Eden becomes tainted in a way.

But, who am I kidding? My marketing reach is zilch these days. How does the old saying go? "If an album falls in the woods, and no one's there to hear it – did it really get released?" So, to friends, family, and the occasional passerby who are streaming, downloading, sharing – I sincerely hope you enjoy it!

A couple notes to make: Yes, it's a DYI album. Yes, most of the instruments are programmed – I'm a heathen using the tools I have at my disposal to convey ideas.

I'm not doing this for: money (I have a job): to launch my solo career: to hit the road for a summer of C-list festival appearances: to prove to you I'm still relevant: etc. And you're definitely not getting a "go fund me" video in your inbox soon. (cue end of temporary dark stage lighting)

I'm very passionate about music – mostly from a listener perspective and secondary from a producer perspective – and I'm not sure what point I'm trying to make with that statement...

Cheers,

Jay Seals

One more thing... big thanks and love to my wife for realizing the 200 hundred plus hours I put into the making of this album makes me happy, and therefore her 100% support is very appreciated, even when I'm missing family and friends' events, or skipping meals on the weekend, or delaying the watching of our favorite shows together.

Track Name: Diesel
My sweat makes no candle,
And this wind holds no flames.
But when I shift it into gear,
I light up just the same.
Passing lazy drivers, on Sunday morning
church going campaigns.
And easing by truckers
Who can barely stay in their lanes.

Forever it goes on,
The white line never strays.
It’s easy to stay lost,
Out here on the American Highway.

I’m pushing the engine,
Just to hear the fans turn on.
I’m drinking diesel like alcohol,
To forget how far I’ve gone.
Gunning through the desert, and dusty towns.
And everyone is on drugs.
At least that’s how it looks
Through this windshield covered in bugs.

Forever it goes on,
The white line never strays.
It’s easy to stay lost,
Out here on the American Highway.

And if there is no exit to take,
Then these tires are going to have to make it,
To the end of the horizon,
Before the world takes the driver license…

There is no exit, no exit to perceive
There is an end, an end to the American Highway
Track Name: Shot in the Dark
In a town on Highway Sixty-Four, I was drinking my coffee.
And taking in the views, walking along that random street.
I could feel my heartbeat stop, when I saw you standing there.
It was certainly a moment; I felt it in the air.

You brushed your hair back.
I wished I had a lot more time to stay.
But, it was easier to just move on.
Life sure is funny that way.

Sometimes it feels like it’s just a shot in the dark,
And it seems like there’s nothing that we can do.
They say time waits for no man,
But love, love, love waits for us all.

San Francisco, after 3am, on a New Year’s Eve,
I could feel it in the air, in that club on Mission Street.
We were suddenly alone on the balcony.
And we laughed at the feeling of familiarity.

Then you took me to the dance floor,
And later we slipped out to the morning light.
And even though it took some time
Destiny happened that night.

Sometimes it feels like it’s just a shot in the dark,
And it seems like there’s nothing that we can do.
They say time waits for no man,
But love, love, love waits for us all.

And the years go by and they take their toll,
And dreams are bought and plans are sold.
How can you trust when you’ve fallen down,
That love has a way of coming back around.

They say time waits for no man,
But love waits for us all.
Track Name: In Case You're Wondering
How did I get this far on down the hole?
I bought a story that youth never gets old.
Probably was the glitter, probably was the ritz.
Too many shots, and I got the whiskey spits.

This ain’t no stroll down, this ain’t no stroll down that
ol’ memory lane.
Cause I don’t like to, I don’t like to walk,
I’d rather runaway…

Take me to the river, and give me bumps and bites.
I don’t want to struggle, and I don’t want to fight.
Lets talk about nothing, nothing in particular.
Let the hours slip away, like unguarded prisoners.

This ain’t no stroll down, this ain’t no stroll down that
ol’ memory lane.
Cause I don’t like to, I don’t like to walk,
I’d rather runaway…

Take out all the batteries and unplug all the chords.
Mark it down to nothing; it’s a price I can afford.
And throw away the mobile, and the constant checking in.
And no one really cares, in case you’re wondering.

This ain’t no stroll down, this ain’t no stroll down that
ol’ memory lane.
Cause I don’t like to, I don’t like to walk,
I’d rather runaway … I better run … I’d rather run away.
Track Name: California Shakes
The rocks fall down on the ocean side lane,
As the sun reflects off of broken windowpanes.
And the birds sing like they always do.
And high-rises crumble across the avenue.

California shakes,
Breathing down your neck.
Like a monster in the dark.
California shakes,
And everything falls apart.

The bridges flex and then fall into the bay.
And the cities are swamped by the tidal waves.
And the fish swim like everything’s fine.
‘Cause now there’s no more fishing lines.

California shakes,
Breathing down your neck.
Like a monster in the dark.
California shakes,
And everything falls apart.

The ocean starts to swallow the land,
Breaking down all this progress of man.
And the grizzly bears come back from the north.
And life unconditionally marches forth.

California shakes,
Breathing down your neck.
Like a monster in the dark.
California shakes,
And everything falls apart.
Track Name: Bottleneck
Midnight never comes when systematic setbacks keep syphoning air from our lungs.
And how do we sleep in a factory of constant demand for artificial fun.
And when you fake
The history behind
Every heartache,
It’s just another pickup line.

How we going find our way?
How we going find our way?
When every little step, every little step
Gets us tangled in a safety net.
How we going find our way?
How we going find our way?
When every little step, every little step
Is yet another bottleneck.

The old days always claim a peculiar amount of blood that is making its way in our veins.
Back to our hearts when we’re racing against the clock in a synthetic time hurricane.
And when we build
The story of our youths,
The part that spills
Comes back as an ugly truth.

How we going find our way?
How we going find our way?
When every little step, every little step
Gets us tangled in a safety net.
How we going find our way?
How we going find our way?
When every little step, every little step
Is yet another bottleneck.

Days come and go,
All that we borrow,
Can leave us exposed.
So…

How we gonna find our way?
When every little step…
When the future is an empty silhouette.
Track Name: Shut Out the World
I want to love you like you would want me to.
And, I want to feel like you want to love me too.

Never a good idea,
To move our house,
Two times in the same year.
Our sanity is falling, falling away,
But before we’re too gone
Into the fray,
Let’s bring it back to even standing ground.

Let’s shut out the world,
I don’t want to hear any other thing.
And nobody needs to know,
In the morning,
What it sounds like,
To fall in love with you,
One more time.
Another go-around with you.

As we get older,
There’s these voices,
Talking on our shoulders,
Telling us to settle, settle right down.
Like everyone else in this,
Good enough town.
But before we think about it any further.

Let’s shut out the world,
I don’t want to hear any other thing.
And nobody needs to know,
In the morning,
What it sounds like,
To fall in love with you,
One more time.
Another go-around with you.

Let’s not worry anymore today.
We need a break from the things we can’t delay.

I want to love you like you would want me to.
And, I want to feel like you want to love me too.

Let’s shut out the world,
I don’t want to hear any other thing.
And nobody needs to know,
In the morning,
What it sounds like,
To fall in love with you,
One more time.
Another go-around with you.
Track Name: I Got Taught
And to all the faces I could never draw,
And to all the women I could never call,
There’s more than a few notches on my belt.

And I’ve built up an image of who I am,
I’ve got pictures to prove it on the Instagram,
I’m like an ice cube trying not to melt.

And like drops of water flowing to the sea…

And I don’t know if I learned, but I got taught.
And I don’t know if I learned, but I got lost.

Looking back over the interstate five,
And to every day which led to this night.
There’s a buzz in this California rain.

And I’ve split a few atoms in half.
I’ve run over some broken glass.
And I’ve poured some of these dreams down the drain.

Like evaporating drops turns to clouds…

And I don’t know if I learned, but I got taught.
And I don’t know if I learned, but I got lost.

And when, it’s gone, did it come full circle like they’ve written in the books.?
Oh well, who could ever forget the way we gave those looks.
You and me – cutting the corners of every fantasy.
Paper trails and failing apologies.

Apologies…

And I don’t know if I learned, but I got taught.
And I don’t know if I learned, but I got lost.

Like drops of water falling to the land.
Track Name: By Your Rules
In the morning – If you love me, I’ll stay.
In the evening – If you want me, I’ll play.
By your rules, by your rules.

Baby bird don’t sing, little crow don’t yell.
All the guns have been emptied of their shotgun shells.
So why don’t we all be real quiet instead,
There’s a hundred miles left through these garden beds.
So give our lies away, no more seconds of delay,
Put it up, take it down, it don’t matter anyway.
The contracts are drawn, in the color of blond.
No signature required for us to carry on.

In the morning – If you love me, I’ll stay.
In the evening – If you want me, I’ll play.
By your rules, by your rules.

Coyote don’t howl, and moon don’t glow,
The baskets have been emptied of all their arrows.
So give your love away, give your love away.
Always remember, no one cares what you paid.
There’s erasers on the end of every pencil,
No one here has to be too sentimental.
So run up the hill and climb up the tree,
There’s a city up ahead full of possibilities.

In the morning – If you love me, I’ll stay.
In the evening – If you want me, I’ll play.
By your rules, by your rules.
Track Name: In and Out Of
Too many cooks in this kitchen,
All with their own different recipes.
Too many wheels in motion,
Rolling their own analogies.
Sharpen them knives and cut your teeth.
Yeah, I’ve heard it all before.
And maybe it’s time to leave,
Or pretend that we’re able to ignore.

And keep up; don’t you want to, want to?
And breathe out; don’t you want to, want to?

And just like that, it’s like our imaginations running,
In and out of focus, in and out of.
In and out of measure – in and out.

And just like that, it’s like our accelerations running,
Running … in and out of fuel, in and out of,
In and out of pressure, in and out of.

A matter of interpretation
The maps that we hold in our hands.
A matter of the legend you use,
To convince yourself you understand.
Tuck in your shirt and comb your hair.
Well, do you have it in you?
To change when it is needed,
Or stand around after you light the fuse.

And keep up; don’t you want to, want to?
And breathe in; don’t you want to, want to?

And just like that, it’s like our imaginations running,
In and out of focus, in and out of.
In and out of measure – in and out of.

And just like that, it’s like our accelerations running,
In and out of fuel, in and out of.
In and out of pressure, in and out of.

Philosophies become like back seat drivers,
Spelling our names for the obituary writers.

And just like that, it’s like our imaginations running,
In and out of focus, in and out of.
In and out of measure – in and out of.

And just like that, it’s like our accelerations running,
In and out of fuel, in and out of.
In and out of pressure, in and out of.
Track Name: Newspaper Ads
In the silence of the neighborhood lights I knew,
That was the last,
Time I would see,
leaves fall on hills,
of my childhood.
Five more years, down the line,
New chances and cold temperatures in forests of pine.

And the snow falls down,
As lonely as an echoless sound.
And the mountains stare at us like they always have.
Like we are as relevant as newspapers ads.

In the madness of weakening states we make,
Casual conversations.
Anything to,
Take the focus off,
The winds of determination.
What to do? Do you know?
It’s never easy to cover your tracks after a lot of…

Snows fallen down,
As lonely as an echoless sound.
And the mountains stare at us like they always have.
Like we are as relevant as newspapers ads.
